Steps to overcome porn

I spoke at our men’s breakfast last October and I spoke about my story of sexual addiction. Although this post is short, I wanted to include what I created as the steps to overcome your sexual addiction. Now hear me though; you absolutely cannot skip any of these steps. You can’t repent and then never read your Bible. You can’t hold other men accountable but not pray for them.

So when you’re ready, read below.

  1. Repent. Repentance insludes remorse for inward corruption and sin. It is not only remorse though. It is a change of mind and heart about sin and righteousness and about Christ. It is turning from the broken cisterns of the world to the fountain of life.
  2. Start your day in prayer. Even if it’s a small prayer. Ask the Lord for Him to be the only thing you need that day.
  3. Read your Bible every day
  4. Join a Pure Desire group and do the homework every day
  5. Get rid of ALL ways to view porn. Whether you need to get rid of netflix, stop watching inappropriate shows (Not my Game of Thrones! Gasp!) your iPhone, install accountability software, etc. John Piper said once “no one cries over missing what they don’t want to have”
  6. Pray throughout the day. Live in the spirit daily (read Galatians 5 for more)
  7. Text or call three accountability partners every day
  8. Love your wife
  9. Play with your kids and love them and guide them in a Godly manner
  10. Ask yourself the why? (I always tell my guys in group “I don’t care that you looked at porn, I care about the why”)
  11. And finally, know you’re forgiven. Know as long as you are a child of God, God sees Jesus in you.

As always, contact me if you have any questions.
